War on Terrorism Essays - Human Rights, International Law, Law

Human Rights and the War on Terrorism Most of us can remember the day vividly when our nation became victim to an act of unspeakable terrorism. September 11, 2001, for our generation, will be our version of ?A date which will live in infamy.? (Franklin D. Roosevelt) As the years have passed and the war still continues over-seas, here in America, our lives were forever changed. From tightened security at all airports, to people arming themselves and blaming others for an event they had no control over and the rise of hate crimes. As our government tries to eradicate the war on terrorism, our human rights and civil liberties are being changed and, ?restricted in the name of security, justified by the administration as necessary to protect the American people, and the international community.? (Tabata, Alexis) The United States has supported human rights and civil liberties only when it did not conflict with security concerns. For an example, the Bush administration was willing to undermine the rights of the people as part of the war on terrorism. On October 26, 2001, a bill was introduced as the USA Patriotic Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act) This allows the government and other such agencies to conduct searches and tap into things like phone calls, phone messages, and e-mails without a court order. This act also allows them to seize documents like financial records, medical records, business or any other documents if there is suspicion of terrorism or if they suspect a connection to terrorism. (The ?Global War? on Terror) Some individuals would view this as an invasion of privacy, not knowing that their phone conversations were being listened to by a third party, or having your financial statements clos ely looked at. On the other hand, this enables the government to closely monitor potential acts that could possibly lead to something similar to 9/11. Unless the government has a just cause or evidence, this ?invasion of privacy? is not a daily occurrence. On the contrary, this act directly interferes with Article 12 of the Declaration of Human Rights. Act 12 of this declaration is as follows: ?No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to their protection of the law against such interference or attacks.? (Declaration of Human Rights) In 2012, two bills were passed by President Obama. The Enemy Expartriation Act, which further elongates the list of things that will enable the government to take away an American citizen?s citizenship and the National Defense Authorization Act that allows the United States Military to carry out domestic anti-terrorism operations on U.S. soil and enables them to detain or hold a United States citizen without a proper trial. This directly defies our human rights as shown in article 11 of the Declaration of Human Rights: ?Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.? (Declaration of Human Rights) September 11th, 2001, is not the only example where human rights were affected. The rights were violated in World War II when Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Executive Order 9066. This order allowed the US to place anyone with Japanese heritage into internments camps that were set in California, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arkansas. (Siasoco, Ricco Villanueva). These internment camps were a violation of the basic rights put forth by our American government in our constitution. The 8th Amendment of the American Constitution prohibits the use of cruel and unusual punishment. The conditions of the internment camps can be looked at as cruel and unusual punishment. They had no access to food, water, nowhere to sleep, over-crowded, and treated as criminals for the heritage they were born into. Just because they had the heritage, doesn?t mean they themselves condoned what happened and to put them into internment camps, being ripped away from their families and homes, it wa s a punishment that went against what was written in the American Constitution. What happened then, is happening

Free Essays on Midway

At 10.26am on 4 June 1942 the course of World War Two in the Pacific changed utterly. At that moment 37 Douglas Dauntless bombers from the USS Enterprise peeled off into a dive attack on two Japanese aircraft carriers. Within minutes both ships were ablaze, their death throes punctuated by the explosion of fuel lines, and badly stowed ordnance and aircraft petrol tanks. Within six hours the other two carriers in their fleet had also been destroyed. The force that had dominated the Pacific for six months was in ruins, extinguishing the hopes of an empire. Midway was a truly decisive battle. After their success at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy's six large aircraft carriers, operating over 400 aircraft, had rampaged around the Pacific, sinking British warships in the Indian Ocean and hammering Darwin in Northern Australia. They were finally halted in early May 1942 at the Battle of Coral Sea, when two of them were damaged in an inconclusive battle with American carriers. By this stage of the war the whole force was exhausted, and desperately needed a refit. The American 'Doolittle' raid, an air attack on Tokyo launched from the carrier USS Hornet, prompted Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto to plan a final showdown with the remnants of the American fleet before letting his forces rest. The raid had been an insult because it had threatened the life of the Emperor Hirohito the sacred leader of Japan (although the government of Japan was under military control led by Prime Minister Hideki Tojo the Emperor was still held in high regard). Yamamoto was confident that he had the advantage in numbers and quality, so he prepared to destroy the American carrier fleet. He planned to confuse the enemy with a diversionary attack on the Alaskan coast and the Aleutian Islands, drawing the Americans north, only to launch his main attack on Midway Island the following day, which would see the Americans hurrying south, into an ... African American Culture Reflection Response Essay

African American Culture Reflection Response - Essay Example African American culture has been growing independently from the standard American culture given craving of African American to hone their traditions, and additionally the racial isolation determination in America. As a result, African American culture has turn out to be a critical piece of American society, though then, for a certain period, it will be an unmistakable culture, which can be separated from it. One of the examples that can be used to understand African American Culture is naming; how they use to name people. African American culture considers names to be regularly have some connection with the same dialect group as other mainstream names found in American culture. The act of embracing neo-African or Islamic names did not pick up prevalence in anticipation of the Civil Rights period. This wilk be the last period. Endeavors to recoup African legacy roused determination of names with more profound social importance. Preceding this, the use of African names, which for two reasons, it was not considered to be pragmatic. First, some African Americans were a few eras expelled from the final predecessor to posses an African name. Moreover, African American practiced naming, which originates before the invention of African names. While trying to come up with their particular names, African American parents’ growth (regarding numbers), beginning in the post-World War II period, started making new names given sounds they discovered satisfying, for example, Marquon, DaShawn, LaTasha, or Shandra.

Understanding and interpreting financial statements Coursework

Understanding and interpreting financial statements - Coursework Example Understanding and interpreting financial statements Financial Statement Analysis involves the careful selection of data from the financial statements in order to assess and evaluate the firm’s historical financial performance. The study focuses on the performance of Morrison’s and Tesco companies for 2008 and 2009. The financial statement analysis is based on the financial statements of both Morrison’s and Tesco companies. The four groups are Turnover, Solvency, Profitability, and Liquidity. Reasons for using ratio analysis. The financial statement ratio analysis is conducted to compare the financial performance of Morrison’s and Tesco over time (2008 and 2009). Both companies are competitors in the United Kingdom Grocery Chain market segment. The financial statement analysis is used to aid management or any interested party to make more informed decisions. Ratio analysis is a better alternative when compared to using pure hindsight, gut feeling, or plain guesswork in terms of making decisions. According to Gibson (2008), financial statement analysis is useful in improving all decision making activities. Since, the financial statement ratios are taken from both company’s audited financial reports, the analysis is based on actual economic (buy and sell, etc.) conditions occurring in the United Kingdom during 2008 and 2009. Economic conditions include supply, demand, equilibrium, scarcity, opportunity cost, and government (tax and other legal interventions) conditions. (Baumol, 2009). Brief description and justification of the ratios The financial statement ratios used in the Morrison’s research are divided into four sections. Liquidity ratios provide information about the firm’s ability to pay its current obligations and continue operations; In terms of justification, the ratios will indicate whether the company has to find other sources of cash inflows to pay for the company’s maturing obligations. The leverage ratios measure the company’s use of deb t to finance assets and operations; in terms of justification, the ratios would help determine the feasibility of increasing, decreasing, or retaining the company’s current debt structure. The cost management ratios measure how well a company controls cash; in terms of justification, the ratios will be used as a basis for improving current cash management policies. The profitability ratios measure earnings in relation to some base, such as assets, sales, or capital. The profitability ratios will justify if the company passed (reach benchmark in generating profits) or failed (generated loss) in the prior accounting period. Financial statement analysis is profitable complement to other decision making tools (Besley, 2008). Critical evaluation of the Limitations of the Analysis with regards to both the available information and the generic limitations of Ratio Analysis There are limitations on the comparison of the financial statements of the two companies with regards to both t he available information and the generic limitations of ratio analysis. The preparation of financial statement ratios would be a failure. First, the financial statement data of both Morrison’s and Tesco may be erroneous Second, both companies may be using different accounting principles. To remedy the situation, the industry ratio trends can help to

Illegal Leisure and its Implications Essay Example for Free

Illegal Leisure and its Implications Essay Leisure plays a very important role in the life of an individual. However, when an individual gets involved in leisure activities that are illegal, whatever the reason, it becomes counterproductive. Illegal leisure is rightly so for reasons that could take dimensions of the nature of health, social or religious inclinations. Nevertheless, the utter disregard of the illegality of the entire illegalized leisure activities would have far reaching negative ramification than is perceived. There are vast forms of illegal leisure activities. However, the legality and the illegality of the leisure are adequately defined under the rules of the concerned agency (Bull, C. , Hoose, J. and Weed, M. 2003, p 39). There are some illegal practices that are more ethically prescribed as illegal than are documented in any legal documents. Despite lack of documentation, some leisure activities are utterly illegalized by the conscience of the person undertaking them. Though there are countries and states that have legalized prostitution such as Netherlands, the practice predisposes the individual various risks. To begin with, the word prostitution in itself presents societal misfit. Individuals who are perceived or who are involved in the practice tend to be delineated from the society (Harris, D. 2005 p 69). They are treated with utter disrespect, disregard and the least integrity by society. Though the prostitutes take it as their daily chore, those who come in for the services ideally take it as leisure. In addition the prostitutes, be they male or female get predisposed to infection of sexually transmitted diseases; particularly when preventive measures are not taken. Besides, particularly where those involve have one of them who is married, risks the marriage of those involved in a number of perspectives. First, if the partner does realize, he/she may opt for a divorce, subsequently this may jeopardize the family unit. Besides, the services offered by prostitutes are utterly delinked from the public limelight. This makes these services relatively expensive (Bull, C et al 2003 p 112). This affects the family income in instances where those involved include a married individual. Further, the entire cycle becomes even more vicious, hence making the family suffer at the expense of the prostitutes. If the whole practice is viewed from a religious perspective, whether it is Islamic, Christian or Buddhists, the practice is utterly unreligious. Homosexuality is also taken as an illegal practice. According to the research HIV/Aids was first diagnosed amongst homosexuals (Harris, D. 2005 p 101). Like in cases of prostitution, there are numerous sexually transmitted diseases that are infected through homosexual practices. Furthermore the entire practice is quite unhygienic. While this is taken more often as a pleasurable activity, it needs to be appreciated that there is the least pleasure in the entire act. The aforementioned not withstanding, the practice finds the least grounding in religious cycles. There are certain people in society that revere smoking of bhang and marijuana. Ideally, they see this as a leisure act. World over, this practice has been pronounced illegal, yet people want to hide and engage in the practice. Medically, this practice causes diverse effects. First, the individuals who smoke for longer periods have higher tendencies for bronchitis. Bhang smokers have their lungs blackened, this affects the respiratory system. For male user of bhang, research has shown a high redundancy in their likelihood of having children. Apparently, the testosterone hormones are depressed in the blood of the user’s of bhang. This ordinarily inhibits the reproductive function of the addict. Ideally there is a decrease in the sperm motility of the bhang user besides the sperm count being lower. Cell functions are equally impeded through the use of cannabis sativa. It is medically proven that the long users of cannabis sativa tend to have numerous broken chromosomes hence leading to malformed offspring. In addition, there are serious implication on the part of the users as the there is inherent suppression of the immune response of the individual. This is as a result of the interference with genes that normally regulate the defense cells. Further, individuals who use marijuana suffer from hallucinations and illusions. Mostly, they have difficulties in recalling events; they are slow in thinking and have a narrow attention span. At chronic stages, the individually usually suffer from mental and physical lethargy. At the very extreme, there are changes in the brain of the user, research does indicate that young heavy user have their brain size reduced. Though the illegal activities seem very pleasurable, this very first perception of their pleasurability makes their probable control even more challenging. Evidently, the practice has far reaching ramifications on the individuals that are into the entire practice. But then how well can the practice be expunged from society, particularly when it purely done in secret (Harris, D. 2005 p 64). This challenge pecks numerous issues at hand. There are several cases where prostitution is done in private premises, implying there is the least room for accessing the premises in seeking redress. It is virtually impossible to identify a homosexual amongst a group of individuals. This presents a technical part for curbing the practice (Bull, C et al 2003 p 161). Besides, a further interrogation into the likely suspects simply implies infringement into the rights of the individual. Ideally, I feel the illegal leisure activities should be made legal, thereafter; the activities should have numerous suctions in the form of taxes to scare off possible users. While, there could be those who have all the requisite resources for the practice, ultimately the number of those engaging in the activities will be substantially reduced.

Romeo And Juliet: Overview :: essays research papers

Romeo and Juliet: Overview "From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star crossed lovers take their life." Romeo and Juliet's death was a result of many misfortunes, but they were mostly victims of the society in which they live, malignant fate, and there own passions. Romeo and Juliet are members of two families that are each others two biggest enemies, there both rich families and with that comes expectations that you are expected to live up to. If something was done incorrectly or a wrongful action was taken, the consequences for that action might be different from a person who was not as rich, because people look up to the Capulet's and the Montague's and will more likely follow them, and want to be like them more then a poorer person. Therefore Romeo and Juliet are influenced by this and marriage with a member of the enemy could result in being looked down upon in your family, cause even more anarchy between the two families or possibly banishment from your house. They are victims of this because if their families did know of this marriage, they would have had no reason to cover up or hide anything, and there would have possibly been peace between the two families. Evil fate played a major role in the lives of Romeo and Juliet because of all the things that could have happened differently, the events that transpired just didn't flow in their direction. A few of the malignant fate situations were the servant asking Romeo to read the invitation list and inviting them to the party where the star-crossed lovers meet and fall in love, they are discovered by Tybalt and he is furious, he consults Lord Capulet, but he says let them stay. Later, Tybalt decides to take matters into his own hands and picks a fight with Romeo, but Romeo backs down and Mercutio steps up to fight Tybalt. They fight and Tybalt kills Mercutio, this results in Romeo losing his temper. Avenging Mercutio, Romeo slays Tybalt and is banished from Verona, he hides in Mantua and receives word that Juliet is dead. In turn another act of fate transpires, where Friar John cannot deliver the letter from Friar Lawrence to Romeo which says that Juliet is not really dead. So Romeo thinks Juliet is really dead and returns to Verona to kill himself. He succeeds and Juliet wakes up and finds her lover dead beside her and she kills herself as well. So fate plays a major role in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
